On icey roads locked/limited slip diffs will put you in the ditch.If the the front is also altered then not only will the rear go omnidirectional but the front goes tractionless as any type of braking occurs. Accelleration also causes total control. The scenario runs like this: There I was just driving down/up this small rise ( or flat section) hit a little black ice,or slippery spot and felt her start to slip a bit. It was after I let up on the gas that all @#$#@ broke loose. etc.. Compression braking every bit as much as acceleration will cause total lose of traction in limited/locked differential applications. Great idea in sand bottomles mud hills etc. Its just that one wheel idling moseying along on slick surfaces will keep you tracking. Just one guy's point of view.
P.S. ever see all the toyota 4x4's hitch first in the ditch after the first snow? Darwinian almost isn't it.
