Usually the filter case has inlet and outlet stamped on them. On all of mine (5 or 6) the inlet (supply side) is the top fitting, outlet (return side) is the bottom fitting. Their is an oil supply gallery that runs the length of the block and have plugs where they are drilled for supply to the mains. Items C, D and E are the plugs for the oil gallery. Any of these can be plumbed to the inlet side of the filter as they are all under pressure. The return side MUST go to the fitting (B) directly above the bypass ( A) valve. The way it works when the engine has sufficient oil pressure the bypass valve opens allowing oil to return from the filter. If pressure is too low the valve is shut and the oil filter is bypassed.
