Excellent, Steve, you sid it better than I did. One last thing, though. The longer the a-frame, the more it is subject to buckling. Based purely on compressive loads, a 1/2" rod would more than support 2000lbs on the a-frame. But of course we know that is ridiculous, it would be spagetti. Basically, if the frame is stiff enough to deflect less than it's thickness under it's own weight when extended with no load, it will stay in column (not buckle under load). If it bends more, it turnes into a bow when you put a load on it, and will eventually fold (sooner rather than later, usually). These assumptions have no factors of safety in them, and the actual load rating for your frame depends on many factors. This is only a verbal descr1ption of the problem of buckling. Unless your comfortable with doing the calculations, find a professional. Lifting heavy loads is no joke.
