I don't think you can get the surface of the journals too hard. You can get the the "inside" too hard...ie brittle. If the surface hardening is well "bonded" and not prone to delaminating, which most diffusion processes are not prone to, and not thick enough to affect the overall "toughness" (inverse of "brittleness"), which, again, most diffusion processes are not, the harder the better, in terms of wear. Please note, though, that surface hardness does not increase general strength. On a 230, I doubt if this process would add any great benefit. The rods are the weak link. However, if you have a crank that has already been ground to the minimum undersize, and need it to have a long life, surface hardening might be worthwhile. I would worry about warping, when subjecting one of these old pieces of iron to re-heatreating.

ps, not an expert in heatreating. If my Dad would pipe in here, he worked in the field for a few years, and has practical experience, where my info is all theoretical.
