Nitriding my crankshaft

Hey folks,

I spoke with a gentleman who has an M-37 with the 230 engine. He says he had his crankshaft nitrided to provide additional hardness to the journals, to reduce wear and improve durability, even under harder driving. He said it is a standard thing to do, and any crank grinder should know who to go to in order to have it done.

I asked my machinist to check into the possiblity of doing this to my crank. He said he called around to the 3 crank grinders in this area, and none of them knew anything about nitriding crankshafts. He has extensive experience with machining, particularly with performance and older engine rebuilds, according to some of his customers, whom I have known for a while.

Does anyone know anything about getting crankshafts nitrided? Is it a standard procedure? How would I specify that this should be done on a Dodge flathead 6 crank? Is it actually called "carbon-nitriding?"

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt
