Hmm... I've entertained the thought of replacing my 727 loadflight auto tranny with a manual NP 435(?) when the former has seen the end of its usefull life. At the current rate, that might never happen `cause the darn thing is so reliable! Aside from changing the oil I've never needed to add a quart, and I've owned it for over 2 yrs! I suppose there's pros and cons to such a proposal. A manual tranny would do better on fuel consumption on the freeway, but would I really gain that much with just a four speed, no overdrive? Of course, an auto transmission sure is nice around town and off road when you want to keep your hand on the wheel at precarious spots on the trail. In retrospect, Freeway considerations are irrelavent for this truck. I bought it for kicking around in the hills. And the full time 4wd is perfect for that, not cruising the interstate.
