I have a good running used 318 that is going to stuff into my M37. I have built and raced a lot of Brand X engines, but have not fiddled with a 318 before. The 318 will be mated to the orignal NP420 and will be using the factory center dump cast iron exhausts.

Because whomever built it failed to use gasket sealer, it leaks oil from everywhere. I'm going to tear it down, hot tank it, deglaze the cylinders, re-ring and replace all gaskets and put in brass 'freeze' plugs. Also a Cloyes tru-roller timing chain. Possibly a regound cam and lifters. I've already inspected the innards, and the bearings show virtually no wear. The motor was just a mess externally from oil collecting dust. A complete cleaning will let me paint it up nicely as well. I'll inspect the heads and decide if they can be used as-is or not. Again, this was a very nice running engine when I got it. Ran smooth, no smoke, idled nice.

Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions while I have it apart, I'd like to hear them.

Going further, I'm wondering about replacing the cast iron 2-barrel intake with an aftermarket 4-bbl dual plane. I found working on Brand X cars that if the secondaries are set up to open late, you can run around on smaller primaries and get higher flow velocity and better atomization of the fuel. In other words, you use slightly less fuel and run smoother and with better distribution to the cylinders. I assume this is the same for the 318? Also, even though I'm not looking to hotrod this engine, are there any camshafts I should look at for better economy at a 3200 rpm sustained cruise? I figure I don't need more power at low RPM, since I have more than doubled it over the 230. I also see no reason to run the cam other than straight up, since I don't need any more low end torque and shifting the torque to the high end is beyond my cruise RPM anyway.

Going further still, which 4-bbl carb seems to do best at severe angles as found in off-roading? the 4-bbl intakes come set for square-bore and Thermoquad patterns. And, do 318's like high pressure oil pumps or will the stock pump suffice?
