I had a friend who was very old. He owned a automotive /machine shop. His hey days were in the 30,40,50's. A customer could bring in a car in the morning. They woudl hit it, grind the crank without removing it from the block. Do a complete engine job and it was driven out at days end. As you shared, Gus told me he stocked all parts on shelf for the popular cars. Gus taught all so much back in the 60's. He retired and closed the large shop. But he moved a lot of his machine tools to his large garage, including a Crank grinding machine.

Gus taught me how to rebuild a engine. He said no short cuts, there is only one way....the right way. I was still in High School. Gus would do machine work on my engines, supply parts and I would pay him a little each week. I got to see a Curtis Airplane engine he was rebuilding for a Gold Cup racing boat.

Those days are now long gone, but the memories are all so vivid.

Paul
