You're right. No doubt things have changed, and for the worse. When we moved to Sandpoint 40 years ago, there was the Pastime Sport Shop and Cafe, and the Pend Oreille Sport Shop. Both sold new and used guns, ammo, fishing gear, etc. In time both closed, largely due to KMart and WalMart moving in. Pastime is now a Sushi bar and Pend Oreill Sports is a micro brew/restaurant. The box stores don't sell used guns, just junk modern stuff. A guy tried to open another sport shop, only to be driven out of business by WalMart and the new Big R Store. Same cheap junk modern stuff. Imported. There were at least 5 small mom & pop grocery stores with butcher shops that sold locally grown meat, poultry, cheese, milk, and eggs. Now we have WalMart, Super 1, Safeway, and Yokes Market. The small clothing stores, mechanic shops, hardware stores are nearly all gone, replaced by WalMart, Home Depot, and the auto dealerships.
But we do have 2 Starbucks, at least 150 realtors, and lots of attorneys, so we are going to be okay.
