I'm talking 20 years ago. So it is not specific to "new gas". Unless you mean post-76 unleaded?
Though hmmm, Norm's pic looks like zinc oxide. I wonder of the 'new gas' dissolves the zinc electroplate coating out of the inside of fuel lines? Have you noticed the new fuel lines in the stores are plasticy coated? I wonder what the inside is, whether it even is coated? Maybe I have a piece of left over in the shop.
