Not that I know of. An old manual I have says they are shot peeneed. And if modern practice is any indication, they would have been hardened to a pretty high hardness to minimize wear in the splines, and to the strengthen the whole shaft.

Not sure if it makes sense that they would shot peen something if it's going to get heat-treated at a high temperature afterward, since that largely cancels the shot peen effect. And not sure they would shot peen it after heat treating since shot peening probably wouldn't have much effect on a very hardened material.

Anyway, that's all I know.
