The back side of the drive flanges are not flat. They cone out towards the center. If you sit one flat on a table, the gasket surface will not touch the table, it will be about a quarter inch above. Same thing will happen if you put it on a rear axle the coned section will contact before the gasket surfaces meet. If memory serves, it is the different rear axle seal that causes this. Pop off that seal and it would probably work fine. After all, the hubs are the same, but the rear outer seal is not.
