Good point, Paul. I've actually done that myself. But you have to have numbers that mean something. I bought a Chelsea 352 PTO that was supposed to have come off an NP540. It isn't close to what I needed, and there isn't the usual ID plate. Perfectly good PTO, but I can't use it or sell it due to the absence of the ID plate. The angle, pitch, depth of the driven gear means everything.
I didn't even think of Greg's option to do as you did, going hydraulic. That's another choice for him.
