The early axle housings for the 8.750" ring gear have to be modified to accept the 9.625" 3rd member. Some of these axle housings were Depot Modified by the Army. The modification, was welding on a steel ring to the front of the housing. The depot then welded on a steel tag that said "USE ONE GASKET". If you use a early housing and it does not have the welded on tag, you MUST use 3 gaskets. These housings are quickly ID'ed by the (12) .375" mounting holes

If your housing requires 3 gaskets, BE SURE to use genuine NOS Military Dodge gaskets.
I ran into a good deal on new differential gaskets quite a few years ago. Price was great. The were greatly oversized in thickness and stacking 3 threw the 3rd member alignment way out. The axle would not even plug in the 3rd member. These bad gaskets are easily ID'ed as they come in plain white
packages and have a DIMPLED surface. They are TRASH. You can search the forum and find my complete write up. The problem occurred when I built my M37. Once I figured out the problem and removed the new gaskets and replaced them with NOS, all was well.

The 3 gasket issue does not come into play with Late axle housings made for the 9.625" 3rd members.
