I use an antique Stanley #18 bevel square more for fabrication. The wing nut on the end locks it up solid. Then use it to set the angles directly. Apparently, Stanley stopped making them in the 1940s. See, most of what I do does not have accurate markings, so doing it direct is usually more accurate. Hey, what is the point of reading the degrees, marking it with chalk, cutting it with an ax, then grinding it to the line?

So far as Combination square heads go, I think any iron one with a name brand is good. Starret, Mititoyo, Stanley, Millers Falls.

But the blades are more critical. Satin chrome is the best for legibility. And the edges and ends should be ground to sharp square corners. (My Mititoyo is 12.002" long.) The ends can be used as mini-squares too. And 18-24" long is good to have too.
