Steering Box Lube Question

What's the best type of lube to use in a manual steering box, or a winch? Is gear oil good enough?

I seem to remember some opinion that using regular gear lube would result in the deterioration of brass bushings since there was some missing ingredient.

I know this subject has been discussed back and forth, but I wonder if we have arrived at a consensus.
