Hmm, didn't know they were still making oil based automotive primers?
In the 1980's when automakers went to low VOC waterborne paint, the primers were still oil based, resulting in the paint peeling off in sheets. The primer was fine, the paint was fine, but the primer was not
compatible with the newer water based paints.
Apparently the new primers are still some form of oil based, but are now compatible with the waterborne paints...and yes that doesn't answer your question, maybe the drivel attaches the primer to the metal... = )
