First, Thanks to everyone (even Mac!) for your tips and suggestions.
After trying three different rotors, from NAPA, we took them out and were once again running through the check list, Thanks Vaughn!
We looked over at the work bench where the three rotors were lined up...uh...why are two shorter than the old one??? We put the longest original rotor, back on the distributor and it fired right up! DUH!
Apparently while monkeying with the bad points, the original rotor was place next to another rotor that did not belong to this engine (no comment, it wasn't me!) Then the wrong rotor was installed (it was 1/4" too short) and of course it didn't make contact with the plug wire contacts, too far for the spark to jump.
We had bought another rotor, of course it matched the wrong one, ha! ha!
Once we realized it was also too short we switched them back and bingo!

I told you it was going to be stupid! ha! ha! We were about 30 minutes away from the dynamite and fire solution... = )
