Simply lack of demand. V-6's became more popular, the inline was harder to smog and pass federal emissions. And automakers wanted to consolidate and pare down the number of plants and options.
By 1988 they had the AMC in-line 6, that was fuel injected and made as much horsepower as the V-8's of that era.
