It goes behind the transfer case.
Before you decide one way or another, I suggest you attend a rally where there are several trucks you could drive or ride in, preferably one with an overdrive and another one with 4.89's and/or bigger tires. Then you will have a chance to decide yourself. The big thing again though, with the flathead engine, is that you basically have a weak engine and it needs all its stock gearing to move 5000 plus lbs. With the overdrive, you keep the gearing, you just basically are adding a 5th (o.d.) gear.
With the bigger tires or 4.89's, you lose some power down low.
You will see this when you drive one. They don't have much in the way of "guts" when you start to get speeding up.
When I started with my trucks build, I went back and forth as to what to do, i.e. either the 4.89's or the o.d. I am glad I decided to get the Dennan on my stock engine !952.
