If you have the 230 engine, then a Dennan overdrive is the way to achieve what you want to do. It basically gives you a 5th gear when you want it at the top end, but you still have the power down low with the 5.83's.
The problem with the 4.89's is that with the 230, you are pushing things power- wise through all the gears due to the weakness of the engine.
I think the 4.89's are best when you repower with a more powerful engine. That is what I will do with my resto-mod M37 project.
Another nice feature of the Dennan is that you can remove it if desired in less than a couple hours, if you wanted to do some serious rock climbing and you were concerned about impact damage on the overdrive.
When I activate the overdrive at about 40, the revs drop 500 and I am then able to get up to 50 without overrevving the engine.
There are many people on the forum with the original engine and the overdrive.
