Had a similar problem with a jeep I had, turned out to be a fault with the ballast resistor/wiring. No power to the coil while the engine was cranking over, but release the starter and power was back on to coil. Try a wire from the battery to the coil (hot wire it) and try starter again, if she fires straight away you just need to find where the break is.
