I've noticed a lot of Asian starters, and increasingly other electric motors, are being rated in kW rather than HP. Theoretically, one HP equals 0.746 kW. Given that small motors are usually less than 80% efficient, it's a fair guesstimate to say 1 kW equals 1 HP. However, when they rate the motors, I don't know if the "kW" is mechanical output power converted from HP to kW, or it's raw DC electrical input, which would be a considerably larger number. Still to a very rough approximation, figure about 1 HP equals 1 kW. That's get you within +/- 50% regardless of the details.
