You can use the original coil if you use the correct ballast resistor with it. Wire it so you get 12v ONLY when the starter is engaged, but supply runs through the resistor while running. Gives easy starting, the 6V coil will stand the 12V for short starting periods just like mid 70's - '80's cars and trucks. I used a Mopar ballast resistor on mine when I did the 12V conversion.
