If the cap didn't move and the pin holes were still aligned all I could think is that maybe if you put the pins in when the carrier was still warm and the cap still cold maybe something thermal. I guess I initially was thinking the cap loosened. You might try calling Bob Stahl at Veteran Vehicles maybe he would know more he has always been very helpful when I have called him.
