Digital injection means no more washing the oil off the walls due to too much choke.

No more pinging, so no more sucked valves.

Computer controlled auto trannies means no more lugging, so bottom end lasts longer.

I think the changes in oils have been to gain fuel mileage, protect cats, and stand up to heat. Or course, the longevity gains from computerized engines are side effects of the real reasons, emissions control and fuel mileage.
