... I have often discussed these automotive cases with our local JPs and Pro Tems who hear them and have to decide them, and I do have one thought on the subject based on a mistake that many citizen litigants seem to make:

Don't assume that the court knows anything about cars!

Most of them don't at all in fact, and even if they do, they are only supposed to decide the case on what is in evidence. It means that you have to really take your time in presenting the step-by-step of what happened, how we know what happened, and whose fault it was. Hint - greasy car parts as evidence can really help, I have seen people bring disassembled engines into court. It's a lot of work, and most Small Claims litigants don't do enough of it in these auto cases, and then they lose.
