Ed covered things well; I also agree with him the TDR magazine has been a lifesaver for me for all sorts of problems.
With my 2001 CTD 2500, I noticed a hesitation or 'hiccup' with the motor when the lift pump started to fail. I addresssed this problem promptly and avoided having to replace the injector pump too.
A fuel pressure gauge is the most important add on gauge you can have with the 2nd gen trucks like the 2001. I got a set of A pillar gauges from Geno's Garage that included a fuel pressure gauge. Now I know if there is a problem. I also added a BD aux lift pump on the driver frame rail to boost the fuel pressure. Check the archives here and on Gordon's site...many postings there.
