I recently replaced the lift pump on my 2004.5 CTD 3500 SRW CC longbed 4x4. The truck had been throwing 3 codes and when I checked them they were related to pressure and ? electrical with the lift pump. They had been intermittant for a year, but more frequent over the month prior to failure.
DO NOT IGNORE!
The lift pump in your engine keeps the VP high pressure pump alive. If the lift pump fails...$300 or so...the VP pump will fail...$1500.00!
(In the 2004.5 the CRD CP3 pump is shut down when low pressure is detected from the lift pump....)so my truck would start and then shut down in 10-30 seconds. I am not sure what the symptoms would be in your 2001.
I would be VERY aggressive and make sure that you have good pressure to the VP pump...as the diesel fuel cools and lubricates the VP pump.
