When you say "you do need to take a little run with those", do you literally mean you are giving the chain some slack and then moving forward until the slack goes and jerking on the stump? Again, "my opinion" is, the only thing worse than doing that with the chain hooked to the bumper is doing that with the cable/chain on the winch. I have seen the bronze gears in more than a few winches split in two from doing just that. Chaining the rear of the truck to a suitable anchor and using the winch to pull the stump is the way to go. I like to leave 5 or 6' of trunk and hook the cable high to give you some leverage.
I wish I had a cord of that mesquite. I buy it at Home Depot to mix in with my alder and fruitwood in my smoker. JH
