3/8" grade 70 is rated at 6600 lbs working load. Grade 80 is 7100 lbs. "Transport grade" is actually the weaker, and "proof coil" (hardware store chain) is the weakest. 1/2" grade 80 is rated 12,000 lbs. What does it take to pull the winch out of the bumper or snap the shear pin? 3/8" grade 80 is easy to find as binder chain. Put a ring on one end and a slip hook on the other, keep a pretty good sized shackle attached somewhere, and you should be good to go for making chokers and pulling stumps or anything else. I can't see dealing with the extra weight and cost of 1/2" myself with only a pickup to pull on it.
