not just a maintenance issue with those engines. overheating problems galore and teh motor mount plate was built out of aluminum and could not hold up to the stress of being in a 1.25 ton 4x4 and massive oil leaks appeared pretty much immediately after intro into the service. Poor design and tent pole quality alloys does not make a even remotely passable engine for a truck. history showed it as a failed desgin right away. I have even talked with motor pool mechanic who served in Nam and he said they were always at the motor pool dead and everyone drove Dodges and smaller Jeeps instead. And personally have run across maybe 5 of them over the years and none of them ran or they had been repowered. That alone says alot to me.
