Turns out I don't need to recore, but looking over a FFPW rad, thinking about it. Looks like sawing the tank bodies all around, not even try to un-crimp. Then the usual technique for a re-core ought to work, tank into the channel of the headers. With just a bit of an extension to the bottom of the top tank.
So how did your guy do it?
