Probably, low stress engines like ours can get by with the lower zinc levels in today's oils.

When the tip of the cam lobe rides over the tappet, the oil can be squeezed out, especially in high performance engines with high spring loads. The zinc stays to lubricate the tip.

Special break in oils should be used for new cams. These oils contain higher zinc levels. High zinc level oils and additives can be obtained at speed shops. Oils designed for diesel engines usually have higher zinc levels.
