Anyone here adding zinc to their oil?

I was talking to my Chevy buddy Neil the other day, he is in the process of rebuilding a Chevy straight 6 for his 36? coupe.
He asked me if I was running zinc in my oil, and I said no. He seemed really surprised, said no zinc would toast a Chevy engine in no time. Are our flattys built different in some way that they dont need the zinc, or is everyone but me adding zinc?
