Rear Spyder Gears

I had to replace the spyder gears in my 48. I forgot to note which way the brass thrust washers install. The smooth side to the carrier or to the Gear? Also, the large fiber thrust washers were missing on the spyder gears that accept the axels. The new thrust washers have two different sides. Which side goes towards the gear and wich side to the carrier. Or, does it make any difference at all? The trivia question for the day. Thanks, Jim.
