When points are closed, the condenser IS grounded. I would suspect dirt between the points, that coincidentally fell out when you fiddled around inside the dist one more time. Dirty points is one of the major reasons things don't start when parked for long periods. Bu hmmm, dirty points means the condenser does NOT go to ground...

You do know about the radio noise suppressor underneath the coil of M37s? A round disc, it can be replaced with wood with a screw through the middle...
