sixe of holes depends on the soils. one job I was on building long rows of carports at an apt complex required 48 inches wide by 48 inches deep! because the area was so wet they wanted the footing to basically float. but in good soils the average engineered holes were 12 by 48 or 18 by 36 or 24 by 36. that was all over here in western WA where everything is wet most the time. if you have all hard pan over there smaller is feasible.
