I believe it has to do with what is called electron flow vs. conventional flow. Electrical current is the flow or movement of electrons from one atom to the next. The electrons actually move from negative to positive. Thus the idea that ground should be positive. Conventional flow says the movement is from positive to negative. Conventional flow won. The electrons are still moving from negative to positive, they just don't care how we view things.
