Automatic torque multiplication

Automatic transmissions usually do not have a very low 1st gear because of the torque multiplication factor of the torque converter.

Example, the 727 and Ford C-6 have 1st gears in the 2.4:1 to 2.8:1 range. (I'm more familiar with Ford options, so bear with me here.) If you ordered an automatic in a Ford, you got a higher rear end ratio than what the manual transmission came with, even though the manual transmission usially had a ratio of something like 3.5:1 in 1st gear. Thus an automatic would get, say, 3.25 gears, while the manual would get 3.50 gears.

With me so far?

OK, I see Chris Davis and others have run a 727 in their M37's. With a 2.8:1 1st gear vs the 6.83:1 1st gear of the stock gearbox, I'd like to know if anyone running a 727 is noticing any loss of low end gearing, particularly if 4.89 gears are used instead of 5.83's.

Does anyone know just what the mathmatical ratio is for the torque multiplication factor?
