There's your problem. ;) I don't intend to stir things up too much but I thoroughly dislike the common Holley 4bbls for anything except racers. Well, I don't have experience with the annular discharge types so maybe they are OK. I've had far better experiences with Carter AFB, Quadrajet, even Thermoquad.

Of course, I imagine this will illicit responses to the contrary.
