It's a pretty low volume item compared with perhaps GM 10 and 12 bolt and Dana 44/60 axles. The "$650-700 per axle" quoted must include new bearings. The diff side bearings are pretty reasonable but the pinion bearings are really high. Here in a bearing supply house a full set for a diff runs about $375 per diff. Cheaper can be found but not necessarily Timken or SKF; i.e. lower quality. The labor is important: the pinion is difficult to set up properly due to the design of the 3 bearings.
A potential price of up to $2000 for a gear change makes one think about a Ranger overdrive which will give an even taller final drive of 4.26:1 but preserve the low end power of the 5.83s, and additionally give a split 3rd-OD of 1.24:1, making your system essentially a 6 speed. This will cost only $1500
