Not a wise idea to machine tapers into alum rims

The reason there are no tapers is that aluminum does not have the wear qualities of steel when it comes to lug nuts. That's why aluminum rims almost always use a special nut and washer and the rim is drilled straight through. There are exceptions, but unless you know the alloy and so forth, you could be asking for big trouble by machining tapers into them. Even lightweight steel rims can get worn out. I wore out a set on a 65 Dodge van. You could hear the rims creaking during accelleration and braking ith the window rolled down. The lug nuts simply wore the tapered holes slightly larger and the creaking was the rim moving on the brake drum. Allowed to go unchecked (ie - replaced) the rims would eventually start cutting through the studs.
