Some things I'm reading here don't seem to match what I've found in the field or maybe its just your wording?
The NP420's I've seen and the one I own that have the longer pilot shaft for use with the V-8 bellhousing are not "modified". As info recieved from a truck parts dealer,3 diff. lenght pilot shafts were made for it.The shortest for the L-head,then the V-8 - slant/6(which used the V-8 bellhousing also)
and the third I did not bother to ask about. That is why I'm confused when you say the 420 will not bolt to the 318 bellhousing without an adapter?!Also most of the 318/Slt6 trucks I've seen in the south have the hyd.slave cyl. actuated clutch fork, and any 60's manual trans. truck used the V-8 bellhousing. It may have had a slant/6 and 3spd on the colume, but it used a V-8 bellhousing as many had two sets of trans. bolt holes,1 for the 4spd and 1 set for the 3spd.Also the early to mid 60's V-8 bellhousing will bolt to the L-head ,Slt/6,and 318.I own a 1960 230 w/NP420 mounted to a 318 bellhousing setup that came out of a 1960 D-100or200 Cant remember that. The 420 has the longer pilot shaft and PTO plate is on the drivers side. This could also be the diff. between the M-37 and the PW, but these parts are not rare.I know these things because back in the mid 80's I spent alot of time in junkyards and under old Dodge trucks trying to find parts that would interchange with my WM300 and hopefully allow a easy upgrade if ever needed.Maybe the poor folks in the south bought more manual tranny trucks, but thats what you find alot of down here.
If we dont start collecting this old Dodge stuff, the heatherns will scrap it all for a little beer money.
Maybe the adapters come in because of what your trying to adapt to as I've never tried to fit a 318 into a M-37.Would there be a market for these older V-8 bellhousings with hyd.slave cyl.?what would they be worth? What would the 420 w/longer pilot shaft be worth?
