The original M37 transmission is an NP420.

What Ray meant was that if you weren't using a PTO winch (not wench, though wenches are good too - my wench is now my wife), you could use either the NP420 or NP435. The advantage to the NP435 is that it is all syncho. The disadvantage to the NP435 is that is rare with a PTO cover on the drivers side, and the PTO's for it are like hen's teeth. I'm not sure on the M37, but on the WDX there was some slight interference with the bottom of the cab. Ray also had to make up an adaptor plate for the transfer case linkage assembly, and thus one needs to be made for the M37 as well, assuming the one for the WDX won't interchange.

The full adaptor kit MUST be used to put an NP420 onto the 318. (The 318's that I'm aware of that used the NP420 also used the hydraulic bellhousing with mounting ears. This bellhousing appears to be scarce, as are the modified N420's with the longer input shaft).

The NP435 can bolt directly onto the 318 bellhousing and does not need all the adaptors provided in the second half of the kit. But mounts to the frame are needed. This kit for the M37 is not available yet. I would suggest looking at the 360/NP435 WDX kit Ray has on his site to see roughly how the M37 kit would look.

The M37 used an early and late NP420. Both have bevel gears. Supposedly the PTO will not interchange, but I have friends with both trannys who refute that. The PW used straight gears on the early NP420's and the late ones used bevel gears. That's probably where the PTO difference lies. I'm not sure about synchro on the M37 NP420's either. I hear too many conflicting stories and posts about what gears they are not synchro in. Supposedly the early ones are not syncho at all, and the later ones are synchro in 3rd and 4th. I have a friend who says his M37 NP420 is not syncho in 1st, but is in 2nd, 3rd and 4th. I've moved mine around the yard, but w/o brakes, I can't road test it to find out.
