So true ! When I bought my first PW the eng. would not turn over.Filled each cyl. with marvel mystery oil, but after a week it still would not budge.Talk about frustration for a young man without much mechanical experience! I then proceded to do to a $500 truck that I would not do again,I bumped the starter over and over and over again(5min.) all pissed off when suddenly I saw a slight movement of the fan blade.I kept it up until the fan had moved one full revolution. I then poured some more oil into the open plug holes then continued my starter bumping until the eng. spun, blew oil ten feet high and all over the truck.Put the plugs in,poured gas down the carb, hit the starter and the beast came to life briefly.Did this many times before I stopped for the day all a- glow with joy at having got it running.Next day I rebuilt the carb, changed oil and filter, hooked up a temp.tank and took her for a spin, thank God for low gears as there was no brakes.I can truthfully say my first PW was where I got most of my mechanic skills, hands on experience, and researce habits, plus much good advice from old knowledgable mechanics. The very first and best lesson I was taught ,it takes 3 basic things for a internal combustion engine to run. compression-fuel-spark,if you are lacking any one or more of these three, the engine will not run.A few years later I helped a friend get an old wooden correctcraft boat w/4cyl.L-Head running after sitting up for over 20 yrs,boy was his grandad impressed.I love these old flathead engines, simple, durable, and reliable. We helped win a world war using them.My 9yr old son loves to tear down old lawnmower engines and put them back together, sometimes they will even run again!Soon it will be his job to start checking & changing the oil, filter, plugs, in the PW. Can't wait to give it to him one day.
