Lead was a octane boosting additive since before 1950.White gas or unleaded gas of pre-70' was not the same gas as todays unleaded.White gas unleaded was used mostly in 2 cycle engines(mixed with oil)and camp stoves and lanterns.Todays unleaded fuel contains many additives that take the place of lead as a octane booster and to help stablize the sorry excuse for gasoline they sell today that has a shorter shelf life.As I understand it, all gasoline sold in the US contains some degree of alcohol which makes a engine run hotter and in the older heads without the newer metalergy or hardened exhaust valve seats, that equates to a more corrosive enviroment for the exhaust valve seats.
