I'm sure you know what gear lube smells like. Rub your finger on it and see what it smells like.
What Power Wagon do you have? If you have a full floating axle, there are two seals on the rear axle assembly that might have failed. If you have a semi-floating axle (½ ton trucks and cars) then there is one seal right on the brake backing plate. Either one requires wheel and axle removal. The full floating unit though doesn't require complete tear down of the assembly.
If it's a wheel cylinder leaking, you might want to rebuild all of them if you can get the parts. After all, they are all about the same age.
