Many times the holes in a fuel tank sending unit (and the matching holes in the tank) have an uneven pattern so the sending unit can only be installed one way. Look closely at your old sending unit and see if it has a uneven hole pattern, typical for most fuel gauage sending units. If so, there's your answer to mounting direction. Happy Holidays!
