LAYERING A 12V SYSTEM ON TOP OF A 24V SYSTEM
This concept is not new. The trucks of the 40’s used this with engines that required 24 volts for starting yet needed a 6 volts system to run lights, radio, horn, etc. In the event you have a 24 volts vehicle and would like to keep the 24 volts starting system and instrument gauges, yet would like to change only the lighting system to 12v or run 12v accessories, do the following:
Convert the 10-SI or find a vehicle that uses a one-wire alternator. A Wrecking or Salvage yard can help you. The more amps the better
Mount the alternator on the engine. You will need to modify an M37 generator pulley to mount on the alternator.
Mount another ammeter in the cab
Run a 10 gauge wire from the alternator to the “+” side of the ammeter
Run a 10 gauge wire from the “-“ side of the ammeter to a fuse block
If the fuse block terminals are not interconnected on the side the 10 gauge wire is connected to, you will need to connect each terminal you plan to use using a 10 gauge wire. From the fuse block:
Run a 14/16/18 gauge wire to the battery terminal of the light switch to replace the 24 volts lead
Run a 14/16/18 gauge wire to the stop light switch to replace the 24 volts lead
Switch out all 24 volts lights to 12 volts lights
You can plug other accessories into the fuse block such as radio, off-road lights, CB, etc. Also gives you the option of installing a 400-550 watt DC to AC Power Inverter to run power tools. System is self-reliant and does not require the use a 12 volts battery.
